Friendships that are built at summer camp are some of the deepest, strongest friendships that exist. How do we know? Because we can tell you stories upon stories of the lifelong friendships that are an integral part of our camp alumni’s lives. These bonds are formed sitting around the campfire, in cabin Bible Study, singing in the Chapel at the top of their lungs, and screaming their heads off tubing behind the ski boat. At a Christian summer camp, children aren’t just connecting over shared activities and hobbies; they are connecting over a shared foundation of the Christian faith. These beautiful friendships are built on Biblical principles like grace, forgiveness, and selfless love. When campers find peers who share their values, those friendships often transition from the cabin to the “real world” for years to come. This kind of friendship is a priceless gift; being rooted in shared values becomes more valuable as one matures and life’s challenges and successes also change.

Unplugging to Connect Face-to-Face

A session at Camp Brookwoods, Deer Run, and Moose River Outpost may be the longest length of time a camper is truly “unplugged.” By removing the distraction of screens and devices (think nothing to plug in except your fan!), our camps in New Hampshire and Maine create space for the kind of deep, late-night cabin talks that form the core of lasting memories. Just imagine 2 weeks (or 4!) without social media 👍s 🔥s, or in our case, 🏕️s! Camp gives campers a chance for them to be their authentic selves and to be a kid again, cliché as it may be, it’s true! To that end, kids learn the art of face-to-face communication, empathy, and conflict resolution in a Christ-centered environment. Most importantly, they learn the very important social skills of introducing themselves, making new friends, and making plans with someone they just met 5 minutes ago. (Do you want to take Sailing first period?). Since camp is camp, this happens in different settings, their bunkmate, cabin mate, activity periods, having a cookout on the Front Lawn, in Hurd Brook looking for frogs, to name a few. During their activity periods, they could be with both older and younger campers and also co-ed depending on the particular activity. Campers not only have the chance to foster real connections with their peers, but also with counselors and senior staff. These godly, older role models are a critical part of camp life and inspire personal growth. The camp setting provides different opportunities to talk about faith, to ask questions, and build trusting relationships with those in mentoring roles. Our camper to staff ratio is better than 1:3, which is testament to the importance that we put on having older, wiser staff as part of our teams.

Overcoming Challenges and Building Camaraderie

There is a unique “social glue” that comes from overcoming challenges together. Cabin Night activities foster a sense of “we” rather than “me,” mirroring the Body of Christ. All-camp games and Color Wars create camaraderie and healthy competition. Campers learn to cheer for one another’s successes and support each other through struggles. Whether it’s navigating the low and high ropes course at Brookwoods and Deer Run, or paddling the Kennebec River at Moose River Outpost, these shared experiences create instant history, building on that foundation for friendship. Our cabin overnight hikes are a great example of this in action. Even though each camper is responsible for getting themselves to the summit, they hike as a group, encouraging each other with each step and GORP break. When they set up camp, cook a meal, clean dishes, they work as a team and each member contributes to the success of their adventure in God’s wilderness. We’re developing character and building friendships at the very same time. Through these shared experiences with peers and counselors, relationships form and this becomes a basis for exploring the Christian faith together.

Mentorship and Intentional Leadership

Connections at camp aren’t limited to cabinmates and swim buddies (think buddy-check!). Our counselors serve as mentors who model what it looks like to live out a vibrant faith as a young adult. These relationships provide campers with a vision of their own future, anchored in the Gospel. Campers feel a sense of security knowing they have a community of older mentors who are praying for them and invested in their growth. Senior Staff and our Program Staff are individuals who not only bring camper experience to our team, but an expertise in their particular field. Whether it’s archery, riflery, Worship, on the Waterfront, hooking a small mouth bass, or in MRO’s Makerspace, our staff intentionally engage campers. The moments off the trail, around the table and at evening circle are just as important as the teaching moments during activity instruction. This kind of intentionality makes our camps special.
