Color Wars, and a Celebration of Red, White, and Blue!

We’ve already reached the half-way point of our first session! The days have flown by, and this Sunday, we’re enjoying the best weather of the season so far. This weekend, we celebrated the 4th of July in style with our own fireworks show, and we’ve competed in Color Wars: our color warscamp-wide competition for team supremacy.

Our 4th of July celebration featured all the best traditions of the holiday: Fireworks; a cookout dinner; and of course, lots of spontaneous singing (the Star-Spangled Banner, America the Beautiful, and many others!). It’s hard to top a cookout with homemade baked beans, french fries, burgers, and watermelon, but our fireworks show last night did the trick. After playing glow-in-the-dark Ultimate Frisbee on our athletic field, we lit up the night sky with round after round of red, white and blue fireworks. It was a great celebration and, as you can imagine, it was a wild crowd cheering on the show.

Today we conclude Color Wars. The event opened on Friday night with Color Chaos: A competition wherein campers compete individually in various games – wiffleball home-run derby, mountain bike time trials, fishing, and other various carnival-style games. Whenever someone wins the game, their team’s color is raised on a small flag above the game until someone else comes by and wins to take over the lead. The game continues like this and at the end of the night the team with the most of their colored flags up, wins. Of course color wars wouldn’t be complete without a few rounds of Trench Dodgeball, which took place last night. Our finale will be this afternoon, with Mud Day. The pit is looking gooey, and our campers are ready for a great day of competition and muddy fun. Don’t worry Mom and Dad, we’ll make sure they don’t wear their Sunday best into the mud.

It’s been a great weekend, full of action, laughter, and good-natured competition. We’re thankful for good weather and great friends here at camp. Check in again on Tuesday for an update on our day-trips!
