Moose River Outpost

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Will It Take to Get to Moose River Outpost?

We’re 2.5 hours from Augusta, ME, 3.5 hours from Portland, ME, and 5 hours from Boston. We’re about 2.5 hours away from the Lewiston-Auburn area of Maine and 2 south of Québec City.

Why Would I Go so Far for My Event?

If you search “Moose River Outpost” in Google Maps, you won’t see much on the page. In fact, the only feature that may jump out at you is the Canadian border. MRO is tucked away in the Maine Wilderness, just 13 miles south of the Canadian boarder. Some would say it’s intimidating to send their child so far away.

What’s important to recognize is that MRO is remote, but that is one of the best things about the camp. How many places you can look up at the night sky and see planets, shooting stars, and even the haze of the Milky Way overhead? Where else can a guide lead your group out the door of their cabin and directly onto a trail headed to a hike a 3,600 foot mountain? How many camps can stare across their lake and see nothing. No homes. No boats. Just uninterrupted shoreline and perhaps a passing loon. To that end, what other camp can truly call their lake, their lake. Heard Pond’s 187 acres of glassy stillness in the morning, provides skiing, sailing, paddling, and swimming until the sun dips low each evening. MRO is special and that’s why guests drive past 100 other camps to get here each summer. Moose River Outpost is your chance to experience something as life-affirming and elemental as the creation story itself. This is God’s world: Wild and beautiful. We invite you to explore it with us.

Is Fishing Allowed At MRO?

Yes! Fishing is encouraged on Heald Pond (before it camp MRO it was a privately owned fishing camp). We do strongly encourage pinching of barbs and “catch and release” especially with the bigger fish. You will need the appropriate Maine fishing license (kids under 16 fish without a license).

Can I Bring My ATV To MRO?

ATVs are allowed on the property, but only for use on off-property trails. They should not be operated in Main Camp, unless they are to accommodate a guest with a disability. We ask that any ATV use at camp happens only on gravel roads and that riders wear helmets at all times. Please notify us if you are bringing an ATV.

Can I Bring My Mountain Bike To MRO?

Yes, please! Can we ride with you?

What Kind of Clothes Should We Pack?

When packing, keep in mind that Moose River Outpost is 1,500 feet above sea level and tends to run cooler than surrounding areas. In summer, plan on temperatures in the 60s and 70s. In the spring and fall season, bring layers to allow for a range of temperatures.

Can I Bring My Own Food To MRO?

We do not allow guest groups to cook in our commercial kitchen, but we do allow guests to bring snack foods and the like. Meals are all-you-can-eat, so don’t plan on going hungry. Also, we provide fresh fruit and other snacks anytime.
