Who We Are: A Christian Outdoor Center
Seeking Christ. Building Community. Embracing Adventure.
Christ Above All:
Every other element of Moose River Outpost’s methods and purposes must be subordinate to the responsibility we have to share the gospel message and to build godly men and women. We believe that every person who sets foot on our property bears the image of Christ and was made to be in full relationship with Him. Our purpose is to build this relationship. The remaining elements of our nature only outline our unique methods in pursuing this goal.
John 14:6 – Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
An Outdoor Center:
As an outdoor adventure center, and not simply a rental facility, MRO is defined by its life-changing program opportunities, rather than simply by its available space. Access to amazing opportunities like white water rafting, beautiful canoe trips, spectacular hikes, and high-end paintball facilities make MRO more than the value of its meeting spaces. There is a unique setting at MRO that is woven between the grandeur of our property, the opportunity of our program, and the aesthetic functionality of our facilities.
Moose River Outpost and its ministries must be defined by the beauty and serenity of its remote location. Even without any human intervention, the message of God’s overwhelming power and immense creativity is apparent as displayed by Heald Pond, Boundary Bald, and the surrounding wilderness. While we do not consider God’s creation a singular means of knowing God personally, we recognize its immense power to testify to his Lordship over the Earth.
Romans 1:20 – For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
Moose River Outpost is simply unique. It is rustic, wild, and separate from the constant communication of the outside world. By separating guests and campers from their familiar home settings, Moose River Outpost serves to provide them the objectivity to make clear evaluations of their worldviews and life situations at home.
Building Community:
At Moose River Outpost, relationships are the conduit through which the content of our message is shared. We empower individual counselors, guides, and guests to share the gospel through relational evangelism. This creates a low-pressure situation in which unbelievers and believers alike can ask questions, and be exposed to the fullness of the Christian worldview as demonstrated by their peers and mentors. The Church has been called to make disciples and at Moose River Outpost we desire to be a catalyst for that process. Traditional camp ministry’s greatest weakness is its inability to continue ministry beyond a session or weekend spent onsite. Relationships, especially within local church bodies, have the special capacity to transcend large distances and limited time periods to provide long-term support and accountability. For this reason we encourage the growth of godly and supportive relationships at MRO. Shared adventure experiences contribute to this bond in powerful ways.
Embracing Adventure:
Adventures are simultaneously thrilling and challenging. They provide exciting escape from the familiar routines of life at home, and yet demand growth and personal development.
When facilitated properly, safe outdoor adventure can create a natural, uncontrived setting in which to explore God and His Word. Where is His power and creativity more evident then on the roaring shores of the Kennebec River?
Other crucial life skills such as maturity, leadership, self-confidence, cooperation, and responsibility are fully integrated elements of most outdoor adventure experiences. The group dynamics and basic challenges of an adventure trip are an excellent example of a safe, but realistic learning environment. At MRO, we can help our guests and campers have fun in God’s world, and in doing so we can address the most sensitive and important elements of their personal and spiritual lives.
Adventure experiences serve the purposes of other elements of our mission statement, specifically relationships and the transmission of the gospel message. Small groups bond powerfully over shared adventure experiences. These memories can become the center-point of long-term relationships. As groups experience adventures and challenges together, they will become more comfortable with one another and will be open to discussing deeper subjects – specifically their relationships with the Creator.
