Uncle Miles went home to be with his Heavenly Father on June 27th. He touched too many lives to count, all for the Glory of God. His joy came from Christian camping, which was a part of his life for 50 years, 10 years at Sandy Cove followed by 40 years at Camp Brookwoods and Deer Run. His passion for adventure in the great outdoors helped create the camp that we are today. He settled for nothing but excellence and worked diligently for us to be the best Christian camp in New England. He and Aunt Grace sacrificially served campers, parents and staff, and will always be remembered by the way they loved us. Under Miles’ leadership Deer Run and Brookwoods experienced tremendous growth and change. In 1977 our Leadership Development Program became co-ed, incorporating experiential learning coupled with leadership development. The previously separate camp programs became co-ed in the early 1980s. His love and appreciation for the wilderness led him to expand the Tripping Program, and that value continues as one of our primary tenets of camp today. Miles’ forward thinking sought creative additions to camp, such as the low and high ropes course and the Blob. It was impossible to know Miles without understanding how much emphasis he put on relationships. At meals he would sit at the Senior Staff table and quiz his troops on campers’ names. It was important to him to be connected. During camp, Miles was rarely in the office. You’d find him at the Stables, down at the Diving Pier sitting on the railing, in the Dining Hall running meals, squaring chairs, barbequing out back in his Celtics apron, hitting homeruns on the backfield, and roaming the Unit. He showed his love for his staff in many ways, notes of appreciation, trips to Bailey’s, dinner at Newick’s, and the annual "end-of-summer-book" to encourage staff throughout the year. In an early alumni newsletter Miles wrote, “ Our vision for the future is found in Jesus Christ, our Savior, and our prayer is that all who come behind us find us faithful to our Lord and the mission He has given to Deer Run and Brookwoods.” Miles, thank you for being faithful. |
